Submissions

  • About Our Submissions

Our submissions generally range in length from 5 to 20 pages, but we welcome particularly insightful shorter articles. We encourage authors to read past issues here.

We feature work from around the country and have published articles whose authors have attended Brown, Amherst, Indiana-Bloomington, USC, Emory, Dartmouth, Princeton, Texas-Austin, Michigan-Ann Arbor, UCSD, Harvard, Tufts, and Johns Hopkins. We especially encourage those attending UW-Madison to submit their work for review.

To be considered, the article must adhere to these guidelines:

    1. Submissions must not have been published in any other publication.
    2. Students removed by no more than 1 semester from graduation are eligible to submit their work for review.
    3. Undergraduates must attend, or have recently attended, an accredited college or university.
  • Submission Guidelines

To submit your work, email it as an attachment to juis@global.wisc.edu, following these guidelines:

    1. Use 12pt Times New Roman Font.
    2. Double-space your text.
    3. File should be in .docx format.
    4. No author-identifying information should be present in text.
    5. Follow the Chicago Manual of Style for all citations. Please use Indo-Arabic numerals, not Roman.
    6. Convert all you citations and footnotes to endnotes. You may wait for our decision process before conversion.
    7. Include an abstract of no more than 100 words.
  • Submission FAQ

Can a person submit more than one piece?
Sorry, due to limited space we allow only one submission per author.

Can a person resubmit a piece that was previously declined by JUIS?
    Only with very substantial revisions.

Can a person be published multiple times?
Yes, but not in the same issue of the journal.

Are there any types of articles that are favored?
We generally prefer contemporary pieces as opposed to historical ones.

Is there a page limit for submissions?
The length of a normal submission we receive ranges from 10 to 20 pages. Please try to cut after about 25 pages; our editing team has done strong cuts and rearrangements in the past, but we prefer not to. Very long submissions will diminish the chance of publication.

Do our citations have to be endnotes in the Chicago style (or whatever style we ask for in the call)?
Yes (unless there are extraordinary circumstances).

Can a person submit a piece that’s already been published?
    No.

Can a person submit a piece that they have submitted to another journal and is pending a decision there?
Yes. However, as soon as the status of a piece changes (i.e. it is accepted elsewhere), the author must notify our staff. Also, if we choose to publish the article, the author must notify the other journal and withdraw his/her submission (if he/she wishes to publish with us).

How recent is a recent graduate?
One semester beyond a formal graduation date.

Does a person have to be an undergraduate to be published?
Yes, or a recent graduate (see previous question).

Can I submit an article in any language?
Sorry, we review and publish in English only.
